Nnenna Freelon
The Duke Ellington Orchestra
Sun, 27. Oct 1996, 8 PM | Tribute To Ella & The Duke
When Paul Ellington, a family member of Duke Ellington’s, puts together a big band, it’s like turning the pages of a jazz history book. «Take The A-Train», «In A Sentimental Mood» and «Sophisticated Lady» are doubtless among the best known jazz hits of all times. It was an evening for friends of swing under the direction of Ellington veteran Barrie Lee Hall.
Nnenna Freelon has been called the successor of the Holiday-Fitzgerald dynasty. Her Grammy nomination, two number 1’s on the jazz charts, and her performances with Ray Charles are some of the highlights of her success. In Basel, she commemorated the deceased Ella Fitzgerald with unforgettable scat numbers. Mentored by Ellis Marsalis (the father of Wynton Marsalis), her performances featured expressive interpretations of standards, but also her own compositions. Some songs in a set with the Ellington band were also part of the concert.
